Great weekend for NPSS Grizzlies Athletics! Friday the varsity volleyball teams travelled to Grande Prairie to attend the annual Pow Wow Volleyball tournament. The boys started strong taking the first match in straight sets against St. Joe’s. Game 2 resulted in a 3 set win against GP Comp. The Grizzlies ended their last game of the day by dropping straight sets to La Crete, putting them in 2nd place in our pool. The Senior Boys crossover quarterfinal match was against Sexsmith. The boys came out firing on all cylinders to take both sets and move onto the semis against Glenmary. Glenmary proved to be a challenging opponent taking both sets. Matching up against John Paul II (JPII) in the bronze medal game. The Grizzlies took the first set handily and moved into a good position to go for bronze. JPII battled back and took set 2. In the third set the boys battled back and forth. JPII took the last few points of the game winning the bronze. Overall, the varsity boys had a great weekend with many compliments on how well the team has progressed and battled for each point. All-star of the weekend went to Cole Harder.

Additionally, the Varsity girls competed in an intense weekend of ups and downs demonstrating perseverance. In the semi finals the girls battled their way to a 3rd set coming back to win 15-11. Demonstrating great court vision at times resulted in strong, smart and structured points. Coach Alex Bacso said, “ on the court there was a lot of joy and appreciation to be playing in close games and earning positive outcomes. NPSS has been building this program for years, and the dedication of the players is starting to pay dividends.” The Varsity senior girls placed 2nd overall at the Pow Wow tournament.

The cross country team was in Dawson Creek competing at Bear Mountain Ski Hill where all runners placed in the top 5 across the senior and junior events. A little muddy but a lot of fun!

October 1st was an exciting weekend for Grizzlies Athletics as most of the teams were competing. Starting on Friday, the varsity volleyball teams traveled to Whitecourt, Alberta, to compete in a first formal tournament.

The Varsity Boys started slow, dropping the first two sets to GP Vanier. In game 2, the boys brought the intensity as they won both sets against the host team Hilltop. The final match on day 1 was an exciting battle against Athabasca. The team started to drop points, but they fought their way back into action for each point; however, Athabasca was able to complete the push for the win. The boys finished 3rd in their pool for the round-robin. Saturday, the varsity team competed in the Tier 2 division against Peace High. The boys demonstrated a solid first and third set; however, Peace High won the match and Tier 2 Division. Overall, the varsity team gained momentum and progressed in a positive direction this weekend.

The Varsity Girls team demonstrated that teamwork and composure create success in tight matches. The girls played strong all weekend, going undefeated to the finals. It was an exciting 3 set final against the host team, Hilltop Chargers. Jillian Stone and Avery Hucker played vital roles in executing skills to push the varsity girls to win the tournament. Alexandra Bacso, the coach, said she is proud of the girls for implementing what they practiced and demonstrating poise and perseverance this weekend.

The Junior Girls Volleyball team traveled to Dawson Creek for a play weekend that consisted of three games. The girls demonstrated skills they have been working on in practice and, in competitive spirit, won 2 out of the three matches this weekend. The team continues to improve each chance they get.

The cross country team was in Beaverlodge on Saturday. Kane Schreiner and Ronin Laurie finished in 1st and 3rd place respectively in the Senior Boys category. At the same time, Elanor Copes took 3rd place in Senior Girls. Congrats to all the runners who competed! Next up, the Grizzlies are in Dawson Creek on October 16th. Great Start to the Grizzly Volleyball Season! All three teams traveled to Prince George to compete.  The Junior Girls Volleyball team looked solid in their first game of the season, winning 2-0. The girls demonstrated the ability to commit and a competitive spirit. Overall, the weekend was 3 wins, 2 tie’s and 1 lost for the Jr Girls.

The senior girls demonstrated their great strengths and areas they need to improve for the future. The best display was against the host team DP Todd with a tough loss 22-25 and 24-26. But, in general, the girls enjoyed getting back to play competitive games this weekend, learning a lot along the way.

The senior boy’s volleyball team started slow, dropping both sets of the first match. However, as the boys struggled to win, they demonstrated significant improvements by building chemistry off the court and increasing their intensity on the court. Overall, the weekend went very well. They came out of the tournament with key goals to work on in the coming weeks. This team has a bright future ahead of them.
