My name is Connal Cameron, I’m 17 years old and I’m a student at N.P.S.S. I’ve participated in Bluey Day twice before. This year when I shave my head I’m doing my best to donate my hair to make a wig for some going through chemotherapy. This will be my third and maybe final time doing so. Each year I raised more than the last, raising $1,670.78 in 2016 and $2437.18 in 2017. Since the first event in 1999, Bluey Day has grown exponentially. Thanks to participants, Bluey Day has raised over $1.8 million to purchase cancer diagnostic and treatment equipment for the Fort St. John Hospital and Peace Villa Care Facility. Equipment purchased included $150,000 towards an MRI machine which arrived in 2017, which has drastically reduced the amount of radiation exposure to patients, as well as a gastroscope and hysteroscope for the surgery department, which are both used for early detection and diagnosis of cancer. It is important to note that all funds raised stay in our community to support the fight against cancer. The goal is to provide as much equipment as possible in our hospital so patients can remain here when possible, at home with the same diagnosis and treatment options available in the larger centers such as Vancouver or Grande Prairie, with the support of family and friends close by.
